She pointed at the pile of meat sitting on the counter top. “I didn’t realize there would be this much, even after removing all the bones and stuff. Would you mind helping me by putting it on the racks above the fire pit so I can finish cooking?” Without even looking at her daughter, Hally snapped her fingers and pointed at her. “Put that heart down this instant, Binx. That’s for later.”

“Aww…”

He grabbed the pile of meat and placed it on the rack neatly, with ease. While he was placing the meat on the rack he ripped a small piece of it off and hid it behind him. 

“You need anything else Hally?” He looked at her and smiled a bit, sensing things were getting better. 

Bianca pointed at her father, looking mildly annoyed since she had just gotten in trouble for trying to sneak food.

Hally pretended not to see, letting him think he’d gotten away with it, since he’d helped. “Alright, both of you, out of the kitchen. Bianca, you and your brother set the table. Bas,” she walked up to her husband, stood on her toes and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you for helping.”

He picked up Bianca and started walking out. “You’re Welcome~” he said in a sing song voice. When they walked out he handed the piece of meat to Bianca.

“Next time don’t point, the piece was for you” He chuckled a bit as he set her down.

“Now go set the table I’ll go get Athan”

Bianca blushed lightly at her mistake and giggles nodding and running off chewing on the piece of meat. 

Bastion walked around the castle shouting for Athan.

“Athan! Time to set the table!”

Hally smiled down at her son and ruffled his hair, bending down to kiss the top of his head before giving him a light shove towards the door. “Yes, yes. After dinner you can play.” She slipped him a piece of raw meat from the pile and winked, “Don’t tell your father. This is my thanks to you for helping me.”

Athan smiled wide, biting into the meat as he bolted from the kitchen. Hally chuckled softly to herself as she finished up the side dishes, getting ready to throw the meat on the fire. She placed her hands on her hips, examining the pile on the counter.

“Hmm…” She poked her head out into the hall and shouted out into the room. “Bastion? I need your help, there’s too much for me to lift onto the fire pit.”

“Hmm? Be right there Hally!” He put Bianca on his shoulders and held her hands. He started walking towards the kitchen and saw Athan run out eating a small raw piece of meat. He grumbled but let it go. When he walked in he put Bianca down on the counter and walked up to Hally.

“What happened? Whatcha need?”

The small girl sat back and flailed her arms a bit as she spoke, “Yeah! I did lots of fun stuff! I played hide and seek with some of the guards! And then one of the cook ladies gave me some candy corn cookies! And then I played tag with Athan, but he didn’t really play, he just kind of sat there and I tagged him over and over again but it was still fun until he got mad at me cuz I tagged him too hard one time and then he chased me so I turned invisible and he couldn’t find me but then I got stuck invisible and had to have him fix it and then he scolded me for not practicing my spells like I’m supposed to but I told him not to tell me what to do and he told me he can tell me what to do cuz he’s my big brother and it’s his job and I told him DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO and I ran away from him and played with my dolls until you and Mom got back.”

She took a deep breath near the end, having said everything in one go without breathing in between.

Bastion sat there a little confused at what his daughter had just said, but after a couple of seconds of blankly staring he laughed a bit. “Well that all sounds really good. Just remember that sometimes you do have to listen to Athan, he is your older brother. But don’t listen to him ALL the time” He chuckled and poked his daughters nose and kissed her for head.

Athan placed the last bone on the ground and sighed. He washed his hands and yawned. Everyday he resembled his father so much more. The way he laughed, walked, talked and fought. The only difference was he was just a bit more serious than his father. Also he was much more attractive. Or. His older self was. He walked up to his mother and tugged at her apron. “There, done mom…. can I go play with Pops after we eat?”

Bianca continued to rattle off questions non-stop as they headed inside. Hally grabbed her apron off of the hook just inside the kitchen and shooed the servants away. “Athan, can you come help me in the kitchen? I need you to pull the bones out of the meat.”

Athan slumped his shoulders and sighed. “Moooooooooom nooooooooooooo, cooking is for girls. Right Pop?” He looked up at his father, expecting him to take his side.

He looked at Athan and then looked at Hally. He thought about it for a bit. Still listening to Bianca talk he looks at Athan. “Go help your Mom in the kitchen, bud. I need to take care of Bianca and she isn’t strong enough to take out the bones yet.” He gave Athan a playful grin and smiled at Hally. 

Athan grunted and slumped. ” Uggghh.. Alright.. Let’s go mom”. He started for the kitchen with Hally behind him.

“So how’s your day been sweetie? Do anything fun?”

Hally let out a small yelp when Bastion suddenly lifted her from the ground and ran with her. She clung tightly to his shirt, though she knew he wouldn’t drop her. He never did.

Once they reached the castle, two small children ran to greet them at the main entrance. The smallest of the two, their daughter Bianca, was jumping up and down making grabby hands at her father.

“Daddy! Why were you sleeping for so long? You sleep a lot! You snore too! And it’s really loud! You sound like a monster! Mommy! When you and Daddy are the king and the queen will I be a princess? Like a real princess? Will Athan be a princess, too? I’m hungry! What took you so long to get here? Why do we have to live in the castle now?”

Athan hugged his mother, then looked at his father in annoyance. “She hasn’t shut up since Mom left this morning.”

Bastion put Hally down and lifted his daughter kissing her cheek and taking a deep breath getting ready to answer all of her questions.

“I sleep because I’m tired sweetie, Yes honey, technically you will be a princess, No, Athan will be prince, Moms gonna cook now, we were busy, and because your mom has to take care of her kingdom. phew!”

He chuckles a bit and pats Athan’s head. “Well it’s your job to take care of her while Mom and I are gone so you gotta get used to it, bud. It’s a hassle but it’s our hassle.”
